Keith Maddy is another artist friend from my days at MassArt. His work has always been really interesting, and it continues to evolve in intriguing ways.
If you are in the Boston area this coming weekend, be sure to check out his work during the Somerville Open Studios.
I met Peter back when we were both attending Massachusetts College of Art. I took photos of him as part of my final project for a photo class, and in 1990 we exhibited together in a two person show called Collections, Recollections and Souvenirs.
From Wikipedia: Ken Nordine (born April 13, 1920) is an American voiceover and recording artist best known for his series of Word Jazz albums. His deep, resonant voice has also been featured in many commercial advertisements and movie trailers. One critic wrote that “you may not know Ken Nordine by name or face, but you’ll almost certainly recognize his voice.”
“Brazil and the Amazon River Basin have been the subject and inspiration for my work for more than twenty-two years. Naturalistic forms resembling beehives, vertebrae, cocoons, anthills, plant forms and insects are spread across the surface of the work. The Amazon River is an apt metaphor for the act of churning up remembered objects and sights, gathered while traveling along its rough course.
The work transcribes a memory of these objects and impressions of what was seen and felt. In its flow, the river boils an object to the surface only to swallow it up again to resurface later. My palette is often subdued beneath a layer of darkness, suggesting mystery. These impressions are a memory of the river bound on both sides by a high, dark jungle; foreboding and beautiful. When the jungle takes you in, it takes you in whole.”
